Wednesdays 9:30 - 12:30
February 1 - Mar 15 ( no class Feb 22) 6 classes
Instructor: Sue Charles
$240 NAA non-members   $225 NAA members

The colder months are an opportunity for painters to focus on studio work. In this class we will follow the traditional method of developing a large painting by carefully considering your composition and intent in a grayscale study, followed by painting a small color study and finally, using the classic method of a grid, transferring your design to a large canvas. Students may complete one or more large paintings during the class. First 30 mins of first class is a slide show, last hour of last class is an appreciation session. There will also be 10 min talks on stretching canvas, making panels and framing art. Handouts. Supply list on registration. Intermediate to Advanced. Limit 15.

The Japanese concept of the notan, the dark/light design, is arguably the backbone of composition. Studying this idea reinforces the understanding that every shape—positive and negative— is essential to the whole. It is also readies artists for the quick decision making required for plein air painting. We will first work with black and white paper to create freeform and observed notans, and then concentrate on using a notan design as an acrylic underpainting for still life, landscape painting from photographs and if weather permits, plein air landscape painting. First 30 mins of first class is a slide show, last hour of last class is an appreciation session. Handouts. Supply list on registration. All levels. Limit 15.

Wednesdays 9:30 - 12:30
May 10 - June 14  6 classes
Instructor: Sue Charles

In three short hours, plein air artists must draw on their knowledge of drawing, value, color and composition and produce a painting. Like poetry or a sprint, this is painting at it's most concentrated as artists must focus on the essentials. It is not easy, but the results cannot be duplicated any other way. Weather permitting, this class will meet on site at various locations on the north shore. First class meets at Byfield Community Art Center for a short slideshow before heading out. Short demos, handouts. Supply list on registration. Intermediate to Advanced. Limit 15.

SUE CHARLES BIO
Sue Charles, BFA Painting, Boston University College of Fine Art
Sue has been painting for twenty years and has taught landscape painting classes since 2002. She emphasizes teaching the acquisition of observation skills—perceiving a painting as a series of abstract hierarchal relationships— and rejects formulaic approaches to painting, trusting and encouraging each artist's original work methods and expression. Sue has won numerous awards for her paintings—most recently for best oil in the NAA Regional Show 2016. Sue is represented by Powers Gallery in Acton, Alpers Gallery in Andover, Islesford Artists Gallery on Little Cranberry Island, ME , the South Street Gallery in Hingham and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. She works in studio 110 at 14 Cedar Street Studios in Amesbuty, MA.  www.suecharlesstudio.com.
